About Me

Hi, my name is Randy Hill and I am just one of thousands of people around the world, tired and frustrated with the lack of consideration that is displayed by a growing "demographic" that I call, "the great unwashed and ill-mannered." People who can't seem to get outside their little world long enough to see the stress that they create on the rest of the population.

I've created this blog and online store as an outlet for this pent-up frustration...and also to have a little devious fun while I'm at it!

Have fun and keep it down while you're in here. Thanks.

[When Randy isn't whining about noisy and rude people, he dreams up designs in his studio at Hill Design Studios. A native Texan, Randy resides in the wilds of the Pacific Northwest with his wife Dawn and four cats]

Potty Talk

Tuesday, May 29th, 2007

Mary submitted the following rant: So, we have this one individual that comes from another floor of the building just to use the restrooms on our floor. They sit in the stall for 20-30 (!) minutes flipping through magazines and talking on their cell phone. Loudly. So, if you need to use the rest room […]

Take it outside

Monday, May 28th, 2007

I had lunch the other day in a popular little Japanese restaurant around the corner from where I work. Lunchtime can be pretty noisy there. It’s a small place in a strip mall and does a lot of take-out orders from a nearby school. It’s the kind of place where all the table conversations create […]

If you’re a waitress, try adding a smiley face to the bill

Saturday, May 26th, 2007

Temple University psychologist Bruce Rind tried a little experiment at an Atlantic City hotel. The room was configured in a way that the hotel guest couldn’t see what the weather was like outside. Rind found that if the room service waiter mentioned that it was sunny, his/her tip would average 24% of the bill. Mention […]

And the world’s best tourists are…The Japanese

Friday, May 25th, 2007

The results are in from Expedia UK‘s recent poll of 15,000 hoteliers around Europe who were asked to determine the world’s best and worst tourists. Criteria included politeness, tidiness, noise, willingness to speak the local language, holiday spending and fashion sense. The title of World’s Best Tourist went to the Japanese…the worst went to the […]

Car horns banned in Shanghai

Wednesday, May 23rd, 2007

This is interesting. Honking your horn in Shanghai can now get you a ticket. Noise pollution has gotten so bad in this city of 20 million (!) that the air waves are full to the brim with sounds of construction, cars and other city noise. Even police car sirens are banned except in emergency situations […]

Good Manners – It’s the law

Monday, May 21st, 2007

Bus passengers in Ottawa who don’t give up their seat for seniors, expectant women and the disabled will be fined $80 according to a proposed new bylaw. “It’s all about making the rules clear … and making our customers comfortable,” says Alain Mercier, the director of transit services. [read more]

Bookstore manners question solved

Sunday, May 20th, 2007

In regards to my last post, I spoke with a Borders Bookstore employee last night and asked if they preferred that the customer put away the magazine or book themselves when they are finished looking at it, or let the Borders employee put it back instead. Here’s the official reply: “If you remember where you […]

Your local bookstore is not your personal lounge

Friday, May 18th, 2007

I absolutely love hanging out at bookstores. Always have and aways will. My own personal bookstore hangout is Border’s Books. As with most of the chain bookstores, Border’s has a coffee shop/reading area where you can peruse a magazine or book over coffee before you commit to buying it. It’s a great setup except for […]

“Personal audio space” on the horizon

Thursday, May 17th, 2007

I read an interesting article in Discovery News yesterday. Seems researchers at Microsoft have figured out a way to recreate the headphone experience, sans headphones. The technology uses an array of speakers that cancel out sound signals so that someone 5 feet away can’t hear what the other person is hearing. They still have some […]

Your cell phone can double as a flashlight

Wednesday, May 16th, 2007

A reader sent this note to me yesterday… “On a side note….there sure are some rude a$$ people out there in this world. I almost hate going to the theatre because I know there are just going to be selfish and rude idiots there. Aside from the usual “talkers” and the “feet on the chair […]
