“Personal audio space” on the horizon
By Randy | May 17, 2007
I read an interesting article in Discovery News yesterday. Seems researchers at Microsoft have figured out a way to recreate the headphone experience, sans headphones. The technology uses an array of speakers that cancel out sound signals so that someone 5 feet away can’t hear what the other person is hearing. They still have some bugs to work out, but an interesting read nonetheless.
I can imagine all sorts of cool applications for this technology. As the world continues to become more and more heavily populated and crowded, we are going to need some kind of virtual “happy place” and a quiet space that’s all our own.
