A hamburger and drink with a side order of please and thank you.
By Randy | January 22, 2008
My wife is constantly correcting me whenever we order food at a drive-thru fast food place. I will inevitably say to the invisible person behind the speaker on the menu, “I want a hamburger, no cheese and a medium drink.â€
“You should say, ‘May I have a hamburger, no cheese and a drink, please?’†is what she usually tells me right about then.
“But I’m paying for it. It’s not like they’re giving it to me†I’ll reply. This drives her crazy.
Now that I’ve had some time to think about it, I think that maybe she’s right. I’m usually in a hurry and drive-thru speech etiquette is the last thing on my mind. I’ll try it. I’m sure it’s hard to be the disembodied voice behind the speaker and I’m sure they get rude people all day long.
Who knows, maybe I’ll start a trend?
